Advocacy

“OPAT allows patients to receive the right antibiotic for the treatment of their serious infections that would not have been possible due to the high costs of prolonged hospitalization. A patient can continue his antibiotic therapy in the comfort of his home, in the presence of his loved ones and remain productive without compromising the successful outcome of his medical care.”

History

The practice of administering intravenous antimicrobial therapy in the home or in an alternative health care setting was first described in the United States in 1974 by Rucker and Harrison for the treatment of chronic lung infections in children with cystic fibrosis. Since then, the practice has expanded worldwide to Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore, with clinical evidence supporting its safety and cost-effectiveness.
